What are the Verotoxin Associated Diseases (VAD)?

Pig diseases caused by vascular endothelial damage due to different concentrations of Verotoxin (Vt2e) produced by Verotoxigenic E. coli.

MORTALITY

NEUROLOGICAL SIGNS

Acute clinical presentation:
pigs of 3 – 20 weeks

  • High mortality, impaired growth.
  • Neurological signs & visible subcutaneous, mesocolon & gastric oedemas, among others.

Subclinical presentation:
pigs of 3 – 20 weeks

  • Impaired growht rate.
  • Endotelial damage & changes in tissues.
  • Ear necrosis.
  • Increase of S. suis probems.

Chronic presentation:
nursery & fattening period

  • Impaired growht rate.
  • Unilateral nervous signs; movement in circles. Atrophy in leg muscles.
Mortality increase up to 6%
Growth worsening up to 33 gr/day in wean-to-finish period
Increase of 22% in antibiotic costs
3% worse weight uniformity
FCR: 0.58 higher in nursery & 0.12 higher in fattening
Up to 36% more ear necrosis incidence

Prevalence of Verotoxin Associated Diseases (VAD)

Wide distribution, with an estimated impact between 60 – 70% of the herds1,2

Diagnostic:

qPCR of Verotoxin 2e
